Opening a bank account for a Malta company

Why Maltese banks decline non-resident companies, which EU banks and EMIs are realistic, what to prepare and how Xavion places Malta company accounts.

A Malta company gives you an EU entity, an English-language legal system and access to the EU single market. Getting it a bank account is another matter. Maltese banks have spent the last several years de-risking, and companies owned by non-residents, in gaming, crypto or financial services, are now reviewed very closely.

This page explains what Maltese and EU institutions currently look for, which routes work for non-resident owners, how to prepare the file and how Xavion Capital places Malta company accounts.

Short answer

Can a non-resident open a bank account for a Malta company?

Yes, but Maltese banks usually want real local presence. Non-resident owners often start with an EEA EMI and build a bank relationship as substance grows.

  • How long does it take to open a Malta company bank account: Maltese banks can take several weeks to a few months, especially for new clients. EMIs are typically faster. A complete, consistent file is the biggest factor you control.
  • Do I need to visit Malta to open the account: Some Maltese banks still prefer an in-person meeting with directors. Many EMIs onboard fully remotely with video identification.
  • Can a Malta gaming company get a bank account: Yes, usually once it holds or is close to holding an MGA licence. Licensed operators have access to specialist banks and payment providers that unlicensed ones do not.

Why Malta company accounts are hard to open

After grey-listing by the FATF in 2021 and its removal in 2022, Maltese banks tightened onboarding significantly. Local banks prefer clients with real presence in Malta: an office, local staff or directors, and Maltese revenue or costs. A Malta company that exists only on paper, owned by a non-resident and with clients outside Malta, often does not fit their risk appetite.

Industries matter too. Gaming, crypto and payments companies are a large part of Malta's economy, but they are also the sectors where local banks are most selective, usually expecting the relevant MGA or MFSA licence before considering the file.

Realistic routes for non-resident owners

There are three. A Maltese bank, if the company has genuine local substance and a mainstream activity. An EEA EMI or payment institution, which can offer euro IBANs and SEPA access to a Malta company quickly, often as the first operating account. And for licensed operators, specialist banks and payment providers that serve regulated gaming, payments or virtual financial asset businesses.

Many founders run a combination: an EMI account for day-to-day payments while a full bank relationship is built.

What to prepare

The Malta Business Registry pack: memorandum and articles, certificate of registration, register of beneficial owners and good-standing confirmation. Identity, address and CVs for directors and owners. A business plan explaining why the company is in Malta, who the clients are and how money flows. Evidence of any licence held or applied for. And a source-of-funds and source-of-wealth explanation with supporting documents.

If the company claims Maltese tax residence, show where board meetings take place and who the local directors are. Banks will ask.

Mistakes that lead to declines

Applying with a nominee-only local presence and nothing else. Describing a gaming or crypto business vaguely to avoid the licensing question. Using a Malta company purely for the refund-based tax system without any operations, which banks increasingly view as a tax-motivated structure. And sending incomplete or inconsistent documents to several banks at once.

How Xavion Capital helps

We assess the company, ownership, licence position and flows, and tell you which institution types are realistic now. We prepare the file so it answers the compliance questions up front, introduce it to suitable banks or EMIs one at a time, and stay with you through onboarding.

If you want a straight read on your own file, send us the company details, ownership and expected flows through the form on this page, or message us on Telegram (@xavioncapital) or WhatsApp (+44 7444 394747). We will tell you which institution types are realistic, what to prepare and where to apply first. Banks and EMIs make the final decision; our job is to make sure your application reaches the right one in a state it can approve.
