Opening a bank account for a Dutch BV as a non-resident

Why Dutch banks decline non-resident BVs, which EU institutions are realistic, what to prepare and how Xavion Capital places BV accounts.

A Dutch BV is a respected EU company, and setting one up is straightforward. Banking it as a non-resident is not. Dutch banks are under heavy supervisory pressure on anti-money-laundering controls and have become very selective about companies whose owners and operations sit outside the Netherlands.

This page explains why Dutch BV accounts get declined, what realistic routes exist for non-resident owners, how to prepare the file and how Xavion Capital helps.

Short answer

Can a non-resident open a bank account for a Dutch BV?

Yes, but Dutch banks prefer BVs with local substance. Non-resident owners often start with an EEA EMI.

  • How long does a Dutch business bank account take: For non-resident-owned BVs at Dutch banks, it can take weeks to months. EMIs are often faster with a complete file.
  • Why was my BV bank application rejected: Usually because the BV has little connection to the Netherlands, the activity was unclear, or the group structure raised questions. A decline from one bank does not close every route.
  • Do I need a Dutch address for a BV bank account: A registered address is required for the BV. Banks look for more than that, such as real operations, but EMIs are generally more flexible.

Why Dutch banks are cautious

Dutch banks have faced large enforcement actions over anti-money-laundering failures in recent years, and the regulator expects strict customer due diligence. The practical result is that a BV owned and run from abroad, with a registered address from a service provider and no Dutch staff or customers, is often declined or put on a long waiting list.

The KvK commercial register and UBO register entries are checked closely, and banks may ask why the business needs a Dutch entity at all.

Realistic routes for a BV with non-resident owners

An EEA EMI or payment institution is usually the fastest route to a working euro account. Dutch banks become realistic when the BV has local substance: an office, a Dutch director or staff, and Dutch commercial activity. For holding BVs receiving dividends, some international banks with corporate desks may be an option.

Many owners start with an EMI and add a Dutch bank once the business is established locally.

What to prepare

KvK extract, deed of incorporation and articles, UBO register confirmation, shareholder register. Identity, address and CVs for directors and owners. A business plan explaining why the BV is Dutch, who the clients are and how money moves. Contracts or invoices, expected volumes and countries, and source-of-funds and source-of-wealth evidence.

If the BV is part of a group, include a group chart with the commercial reason for each entity.

Mistakes that cause declines

A BV used only as an EU front for a business run entirely elsewhere. Vague activity descriptions. Group structures with offshore parents and no explanation. Applying to several Dutch banks at once with different stories. And underestimating how long the bank's review can take, then abandoning the application halfway.

How Xavion Capital helps

We review the BV, its ownership and flows, tell you which institutions are realistic now, and prepare the file so it answers compliance questions before they are asked. We introduce it to suitable banks or EMIs one at a time and support you through onboarding.

If you want a straight read on your own file, send us the company details, ownership and expected flows through the form on this page, or message us on Telegram (@xavioncapital) or WhatsApp (+44 7444 394747). We will tell you which institution types are realistic, what to prepare and where to apply first. Banks and EMIs make the final decision; our job is to make sure your application reaches the right one in a state it can approve.
