Crypto trading fees and VIP access in India.

India combines one of the world's largest crypto user bases with one of its heaviest tax treatments. When flat tax and withholding sit on top of every trade, execution cost stops being a rounding error and becomes the whole margin.

1. What India actually offers a trading desk

India never banned crypto trading, but it taxed it hard: a flat rate on gains with no offsetting of losses, plus withholding on transfers. That regime deliberately suppressed high-frequency retail churn and pushed a meaningful share of professional volume toward structures and venues where the mechanics differ.

Separately, platforms serving Indian users must register with FIU-IND and comply with anti-money-laundering obligations. Several global exchanges completed that registration after a period of enforcement, which is why market access for Indian residents looks different today than it did a few years ago.

The user base is vast and technically strong — India is one of the largest sources of crypto developers globally — and the professional layer includes serious quant desks, treasuries and funds, most of which think carefully about jurisdiction because the tax arithmetic forces them to.

For fee purposes the key insight is that Indian desks are unusually cost-literate. They already model the tax drag on every strategy, so a conversation about maker rebates and negotiated tiers lands with people who can immediately price what it is worth.

In a market where a withholding tax lands on every transfer, the difference between rack rate and a negotiated maker fee is not cosmetic — it decides which strategies survive.

2. Which exchanges are usable from here

Registered domestic exchanges handle rupee rails and are the compliant route for INR in and out, operating under the tax withholding mechanics that apply to Indian platforms.

Global venues that have completed FIU-IND registration serve Indian users, and that is where derivatives depth and institutional programmes sit. Which products are available to an Indian-resident account varies by venue and changes with policy, so confirm before building a strategy around it.

For desks operating through offshore entities, the offshore venue relationship is the primary one and should be structured as such from the first account, not migrated later.

3. How VIP tiers read a Indian desk

The mechanics are identical everywhere: trailing 30-day volume on that venue, sometimes combined with a token or asset holding, mapped onto a published ladder. Nothing about your location changes that arithmetic. What your location changes is which entity you face, which products you can route there, and therefore how much volume you can concentrate in one place.

Because the tax regime penalises churn, many Indian desks trade fewer, larger clips — which is helpful for tier concentration but means monthly volume can be lumpy. Ladders read trailing windows, so a lumpy profile can sit a tier below where the annual average would place it. That gap is exactly what a negotiated conversation can address.

Maker-side positioning matters more than usual here: when tax already consumes a fixed slice of gains, the spread between taker and maker pricing is a larger share of remaining margin than it is elsewhere.

Ladders are also blind to the thing that defines most serious desks: multi-venue operation. A firm trading meaningful monthly size split across four platforms shows up as four unremarkable mid-tier accounts paying mid-tier rates, when the aggregate profile would interest any of the four institutional desks. Only a negotiated conversation can see the aggregate.

4. Entity, residence and banking — the parts that gate everything

Fee outcomes are decided long before the fee conversation. Three things gate the whole exercise: the entity in whose name the accounts sit, the residence attached to the beneficial owner, and the fiat rails that move money in and out. Get those wrong and no amount of volume rescues the terms.

Indian residents face specific rules on foreign asset holdings, remittance limits and disclosure. Offshore structures are used by Indian-linked desks, but the compliance perimeter is real and enforcement has tightened — this is a question for Indian tax counsel first and an exchange second.

Non-resident Indians and India-linked founders based in the UAE, Singapore or the US operate in a different position entirely, and that is where much of the offshore-structured professional flow actually sits.

Whatever the structure, documentation of source of funds and of the entity's ownership is what determines whether an institutional desk can onboard you at all.

The practical rule is simple: decide the entity and the onboarding route before the first deposit, not after. Consolidating accounts opened in three different names, on three different exchange entities, is far harder than opening them correctly once.

5. Where negotiated terms fit for a desk based here

Every major venue runs a layer above the published VIP table: broker, institutional and market-maker programmes where fees, rebates and limits are agreed per relationship rather than read off a chart. That layer is where genuinely low maker fees and real rebates live, and it is reached by introduction, not by a support ticket.

Institutional coverage for India is thinner than the market size implies, and desks that arrive with clean structure and a documented volume history stand out immediately. For India-linked desks operating through Gulf or Singapore entities, the introduction is straightforward; for onshore-resident desks it depends heavily on the venue's current India policy.

Xavion Capital negotiates on your behalf through direct partner relationships with exchange institutional and VIP desks. The sequence never changes: profile assessment (volume anywhere, products traded, entity and residence), compliance screening before any fee is taken, an honest read of what we expect a desk to grant, then a private introduction and discussion.

You complete each exchange's standard KYC in full, and any preferential terms are the exchange's decision, confirmed privately and applied at their discretion. Where the numbers support it, well-presented files from India have secured treatment materially better than rack rate for accounts of comparable size — but actual terms are confidential, case-by-case, and nothing is guaranteed in advance.

Published ladders read only the flow on that one venue. Institutional desks will look at everything you trade, everywhere — if someone puts it in front of them properly.

6. Compliance, residence and what this page is not

A negotiated introduction is advocacy, not a workaround. Nothing here is about evading a market-access restriction, misrepresenting residence, or routing around a licensing regime. If a venue does not serve your jurisdiction, the answer is a different venue or a different entity — properly constituted, properly disclosed.

Nothing here is a route around Indian tax, TDS mechanics, foreign exchange management rules or FIU registration requirements, and we do not advise on using offshore entities to avoid Indian obligations. Take Indian counsel on residence, disclosure and remittance before structuring anything.

Exchanges verify identity, residence, sanctions exposure and source of funds at every tier, and the diligence gets heavier as the tier improves. A file that cannot survive that is a file we decline before it wastes anyone's time.

How does Indian crypto tax affect trading strategy?

A flat tax on gains with no loss offsetting, plus withholding on transfers, penalises high-frequency churn and pushes desks toward fewer, larger, more cost-optimised executions.

They help more, not less. When a fixed slice of gains is already taxed away, execution cost is a larger share of what remains.

Do exchanges count volume traded on other venues?

Automatic VIP ladders do not — they read only the trailing volume booked on that one platform. Institutional and broker desks do consider demonstrated volume elsewhere when it is presented credibly, which is the strongest argument most multi-venue desks never make.

Does an introduction skip exchange KYC?

Never. Identity, residence, sanctions screening and source-of-funds verification apply in full at every tier, and the diligence gets heavier as the terms improve, not lighter.
