ECB invites online merchants to join the digital euro pilot

E-commerce and mobile-commerce merchants can express interest by 27 October 2026. The planned pilot is a test of payment infrastructure, not a decision to launch a digital euro.

The European Central Bank is inviting e-commerce and mobile-commerce merchants to express interest in its digital euro pilot, with applications due by 27 October 2026. An online focus session on 6 October explained the pilot's objectives and merchant selection process. For European businesses, this is a concrete opportunity to take part in testing a potential payment method rather than speculate about a launch.

The ECB plans a twelve-month pilot starting in the second half of 2027. Its published information says participants will include 36 euro-area payment service providers, selected merchants and staff from the ECB and 19 national central banks. The exercise will test a beta version in real-life payment situations and assess robustness, usability and scalability.

Participation does not mean that a digital euro is already available to the public. The ECB explicitly says it will only decide whether to issue one after the regulation has been adopted. Its aim of readiness for a potential first issuance in 2029 remains conditional on legislation. Merchants should therefore keep their existing acquiring, account and settlement arrangements in place rather than plan around an assumed replacement date.

An interested merchant should review the ECB's application documents and discuss technical readiness with its payment provider. The useful commercial questions concern checkout integration, reconciliation and operational support. Why it matters for banking

European online businesses have a near-term participation deadline, but no reason to abandon working payment rails. A well-matched account, gateway and processing arrangement remains the priority while future infrastructure is tested.
