UK FCA opens its crypto authorisation gateway
From 30 September 2026 crypto firms can apply to the FCA under the new FSMA regime. The main window closes 28 February 2027; the regime is expected to start 25 October 2027.
The Financial Conduct Authority's application gateway for cryptoasset activities opens at 7am UK time on 30 September 2026. The main application period runs until 28 February 2027, with the new regime expected to take effect on 25 October 2027.
Existing money-laundering registration does not convert automatically into authorisation. Firms must map each activity they carry on to the correct permission and submit business plans, controls and financial forecasts; the FCA has published a 73-page preview of the application.
Reports indicate that firms which file a valid, complete application within the main window are treated more favourably at commencement than late applicants, who may be limited to servicing existing contracts.
UK banks and EMIs increasingly ask crypto clients for evidence of their regulatory pathway. A documented FCA application plan is likely to become part of standard onboarding files for UK-facing crypto businesses.
