Xavion Capital/Insight/US Banking From Ireland
Banking & Payment Rails

Access US banking from Ireland through a US LLC.

Ireland hosts the European headquarters of half of US technology and still has one of the thinnest domestic banking markets in the EU. Two major banks left the market in the space of two years, and what remains is concentrated, conservative and slow with anything that looks unusual. For a company whose revenue is mostly dollars, a US LLC with US banking is both a currency fix and a concentration hedge.

Short answer

Can a founder in Ireland open a US business bank account?

Yes. An Ireland-based founder can hold US business banking through a US LLC with an EIN, onboarding remotely at a payment institution in roughly one to three weeks. Concentration in Irish retail banking makes a second, structurally different jurisdiction unusually valuable here — the entity is what US compliance underwrites, not your Irish address.

  • Why founders here do it: USD settlement without an FX leg on every invoice, a US entity of record for US platforms, and a second banking jurisdiction in a market with very few domestic alternatives.
  • Who we see most: Software and SaaS companies, contractors engaged by US groups, fund and corporate service providers, marketplace sellers and consultancies serving US parent companies.
  • Realistic timeline: Six to twelve weeks from decision to first received payment; the IRS EIN is usually the long pole at four to eight weeks without a US SSN.

A concentrated market with narrow appetite

Ireland's retail banking market contracted sharply when Ulster Bank and KBC withdrew. What is left is a small number of institutions handling a large share of the country's business accounts, and concentration changes behaviour: when there is little competitive pressure, onboarding timelines stretch, exceptions are declined rather than negotiated, and a business model the credit committee has not seen before is simply outside policy.

For domestic businesses this is an inconvenience. For a company invoicing US customers in dollars it is structural. Every receipt converts to euro on arrival, US platforms that only settle to US accounts need a workaround, and if the one relationship you have decides your sector no longer fits, there is no obvious second option in the country.

That last point is the one Irish founders raise most often once they think about it. Redundancy is not paranoia in a market this thin — it is basic operational planning.

In a market with two serious incumbents, a second banking jurisdiction is not a luxury. It is the redundancy the domestic market cannot give you.

How this sits with an Irish limited company

Most Irish clients keep the Irish company and add a US LLC that contracts with US customers and holds the US rails. The Irish entity keeps employment, domestic operations, Revenue filings and CRO obligations. Where value flows between them, it flows under a written services agreement with invoices that reflect what each side actually does.

Because Ireland is a common location for US-parented groups, Irish founders are often already familiar with intercompany documentation. Apply the same discipline here. The US bank's question is simple — what does the LLC do, who pays it, and why does money move to a related Irish entity — and a clear answer in the file is what gets it approved.

Where the founder is a contractor engaged by a US group, the shape is usually simpler: the LLC contracts, the LLC gets paid, and distributions are handled on advice.

Which Irish profiles clear US onboarding

Software, SaaS, professional services, fund administration support and contracting into US groups all clear standard onboarding with a properly prepared file. Irish beneficial owners are unremarkable to US compliance teams.

Digital assets, gaming, forex, adult, nutra and money services need institution matching rather than optimism. They can be placed where the institution's published appetite covers them and the file carries licensing evidence, AML policy and monitoring arrangements.

As everywhere, the sequence matters more than the effort. A recorded decline at a mainstream institution makes the next application harder, so we match before we submit.

How Xavion runs it end to end

We assess first: beneficial owner residency, what the business does, who pays it and from where, volumes and average ticket. You get a plain answer on whether US banking is realistic, which institutions fit and where the risk sits, before anything is filed.

Then formation and EIN, a banking file built to institutional standard with the business narrative and source-of-funds pack, submission to matched institutions, and management of the compliance dialogue through to opening. After that, rail-stack design and ongoing compliance — annual state report, Form 5472 where applicable.

We do not contact previous institutions, recover funds or guarantee decisions. Speak with a partner and we will tell you honestly what your file can carry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an Irish resident open a US business bank account?

Yes, through a US LLC with an EIN and a prepared compliance file. Payment institutions typically onboard remotely in one to three weeks, chartered banks in four to ten. Approval turns on file quality and institution matching, not on Irish residency.

Why would an Irish company want US banking at all?

Three reasons: dollar revenue held as dollars instead of converted on arrival, access to US platforms and payors that settle only to US accounts, and redundancy in a domestic market with very few remaining institutions.

Do I need to close my Irish company?

No. The usual structure keeps the Irish entity for domestic operations and Revenue filings, with the US LLC holding US contracts and rails under a documented intercompany agreement.

Does a US LLC create Irish tax exposure?

It can. Irish residence and management-and-control rules, and Revenue's treatment of US LLCs, mean the analysis is fact-specific and needs Irish advice. Filing obligations arise on the US side too, including Form 5472 where applicable. General information, not tax advice.

Which state should the LLC be formed in?

Wyoming, Delaware and New Mexico all work for founders outside the US. State choice affects fees, privacy and reporting — not whether an institution says yes. That is driven by the file and the match.

How long does the whole process take?

Six to twelve weeks from decision to first received payment is realistic. The EIN is normally the long pole at four to eight weeks without a US SSN.
