Xavion Capital/Insight/US Banking From Portugal
Banking & Payment Rails

Access US banking from Portugal through a US LLC.

Portugal attracted an enormous inflow of remote founders and then quietly tightened the banking that made it work. Non-resident-controlled companies, crypto-adjacent income and platform revenue now attract source-of-funds review, and several institutions have narrowed their appetite entirely. A US LLC with US banking gives that population a stable place for dollar revenue to land.

Short answer

Can a founder in Portugal open a US business bank account?

Yes. A Portugal-based founder can hold US business banking through a US LLC with an EIN, onboarding remotely at a payment institution in roughly one to three weeks. The LLC is what US compliance underwrites; your Portuguese residence permit or NIF status is a KYC input, not a barrier.

  • Why founders here do it: A US structure that US payors, platforms and processors already recognise, and USD held outside the euro conversion cycle.
  • Who we see most: Remote founders and D7/digital-nomad visa holders, creators, consultants, crypto-adjacent operators and small software companies in Lisbon and Porto.
  • Realistic timeline: Six to twelve weeks from decision to first received payment; the IRS EIN is usually the long pole at four to eight weeks without a US SSN.

The banking that came with the visa wave has narrowed

Between 2018 and 2022 a large number of foreign founders arrived, opened Portuguese accounts on the strength of a NIF and a residence permit, and ran global businesses through them. Institutions have since reviewed those portfolios. Where the business is digitally native, the customers are all abroad and the owner is foreign, the file now attracts questions it did not attract then — and in some cases an exit.

Crypto is the sharpest example. Portugal's reputation as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction was about tax treatment, never about banking. Exchange inflows to a personal or corporate Portuguese account still trigger source-of-funds review, and several banks decline the relationship outright.

Layered on top is the ordinary cost: dollar revenue converted to euro on arrival, and US platforms that treat a Portuguese IBAN as the exception path.

Portugal was never crypto-friendly at the banking layer. It was tax-friendly. Those are different problems with different fixes.

How this works with a Lda or as a resident individual

Where there is a Portuguese Lda, it keeps domestic operations, employment and Autoridade Tributária filings, while the US LLC contracts with US customers and holds the US rails, connected by a written services agreement.

Many Portugal-based founders have no local operating company at all — they live in Portugal and serve customers everywhere. There the LLC is the trading entity and the Portuguese analysis is personal: tax residence after 183 days, the NHR/IFICI position where it applies, and CFC and reporting rules. That analysis belongs with a Portuguese adviser before the structure is built.

The one thing to avoid is running growing platform payouts into a personal Portuguese account. It works until volume rises, and then it is the trigger for the review.

03

Which Portugal-based profiles clear US onboarding

Consultants, agencies, SaaS founders, creators with documented platform income and e-commerce operators clear standard onboarding with a properly prepared file.

Crypto and digital assets, gaming, forex, adult and money services need institution matching and a heavier file: exchange statements, source-of-funds documentation, AML policy and, where relevant, licensing evidence.

Match before you apply. A decline recorded at a mainstream institution follows you to the next one.

How Xavion runs it end to end

Assessment first: where you are tax resident, how the business earns, who pays it and from where, volumes and average ticket. Then an honest read on whether US banking is realistic and which institutions fit, before anything is filed.

Execution: formation, registered agent, operating agreement, EIN chased through the IRS, a banking file to institutional standard, submission to matched institutions, and the compliance dialogue managed to opening. Then rail-stack design and ongoing compliance including Form 5472 where applicable.

We do not contact previous institutions, recover funds or guarantee any decision. Speak with a partner and get a realistic answer first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone living in Portugal open a US business bank account?

Yes, through a US LLC with an EIN and a prepared compliance file. Payment institutions onboard remotely in roughly one to three weeks; chartered banks in four to ten.

Is this a way around Portuguese tax?

No. If you are tax resident in Portugal, your worldwide position is assessed there, subject to any regime you qualify for. CFC and reporting rules can apply. Take Portuguese advice; this page is general information, not tax advice.

I am crypto-native. Will a US institution take me?

Sometimes, with the right institution and a heavier file — exchange statements, source-of-funds documentation and a clear account narrative. It will not be a mainstream US neobank, and matching matters more than anything else.

Do I need a Portuguese company as well?

Only if you have Portuguese operations, staff or customers. Many clients here have neither and use the LLC as the trading entity, with their personal Portuguese tax position handled on advice.

Do I have to travel to the US?

Usually not. Most licensed payment institutions onboard entirely remotely. We flag in advance any institution that requires in-person verification or a US signatory.

How long does it take?

Six to twelve weeks from decision to first received payment; the EIN is normally the long pole at four to eight weeks without a US SSN.
