Peptide payment processing and merchant accounts

Stripe, PayPal, Square and Shopify Payments all list peptides among restricted or prohibited products, and peptide stores opened on those platforms are often closed once the products are identified, with balances held for months.

Processing for a peptide business is not illegal in itself. It is a high-risk category, and acquirers that accept it look closely at what is sold, to whom, and how the website describes it. This page explains what underwriters check and how to prepare a file they can approve.

Short answer

Is peptide payment processing legal?

Processing is lawful when the products are sold lawfully and marketed accurately. The category is high risk, so most mainstream processors do not accept it.

  • Why did Stripe or Shopify close my peptide store: Their terms restrict peptides and similar products, and accounts are usually closed once the products are identified, often with funds held.
  • Do research-only disclaimers make a store approvable: Only if the whole site is consistent with research use. Dosing guides, health claims or consumer marketing undermine the disclaimer and usually lead to decline.
  • Will I need a rolling reserve: Often, at least for new accounts. Size and duration depend on volume, dispute history and the acquirer.

Why peptides are high risk for acquirers

Card scheme programmes such as the Visa Integrity Risk Program and Mastercard's Business Risk Assessment and Mitigation rules let the schemes fine acquirers for transactions involving unapproved drugs or misleading health claims. Several popular peptides are not approved medicines, and some appear on FDA lists of substances that compounding pharmacies may not use. Acquirers therefore need evidence that each merchant sells lawfully and markets accurately.

Two business models underwriters separate

Prescription models sell compounded or approved peptides through licensed prescribers and pharmacies, usually with LegitScript or similar certification. Research supply models sell to laboratories and researchers with clear research-only terms. Acquirers treat these very differently, so state your model plainly. A store that mixes research-only labels with dosing guides, before and after photos or wellness claims is usually declined.

What qualifies

Acquirers that accept the sector typically want a registered company with transparent ownership, products sourced from identifiable manufacturers, third-party testing for each batch, and website copy with no claims to treat, cure or improve a condition. Prescription sellers need valid prescriber and pharmacy arrangements for every market they ship to. We do not work with sellers of products that require a prescription but are sold without one.

Testing and product documentation

Prepare a certificate of analysis per batch from an independent laboratory, showing identity and purity testing such as HPLC and mass spectrometry, plus supplier invoices and a product list matched to those certificates. Underwriters may sample product pages against the documents, so the catalogue must match exactly.

Website and checkout controls

Clear terms, refund and shipping policies, age and use acknowledgements at checkout, a recognisable billing descriptor and responsive customer support all reduce disputes. Remove reviews or affiliate content that make health claims, because acquirers judge the whole site, including user content and linked social channels.

Processing options and typical terms

Peptide merchants are usually placed with high-risk acquirers that accept nutraceutical or research supply categories, often with a rolling reserve for new accounts and lower initial limits. Many add ACH or bank transfer as a second payment rail so checkout continues during a processor review. Fees, reserves and limits are set by each acquirer after underwriting.

Documents underwriters ask for

Expect company registration and ownership documents, ID for directors and beneficial owners, a business bank account, six months of processing statements if you have them, the testing file above, and a live website. Prescription models also need prescriber, pharmacy and certification evidence.
